Rediscovering Grace (1:17-2:10)

We love to highlight those who made it to the top quickly and seemingly with ease. Failure rarely appeals to us but could it be one of our greatest gifts? J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, said in a commencement speech that it wasn’t until after she had failed at some critical things in life: marriage, finances, etc., that she devoted herself to writing. She said she was about as close as she could be to homeless in Britain without actually being on the street. And that’s when she wrote. Upon reflection, she said it was in her failure that she found her calling. In the same way, God’s greatest work in us is often not done until we reach the bottom of our lives. As we continue our series, “Jonah: Living for More than Me,” we’re going to take a look at the gift of our failure in pointing us to the radical grace of God and how it has the power to help us find our greatest hope and a calling beyond ourselves.
